How many Ohio homes are going to sheriff’s sale?
Ohio’s county sheriffs set 1,014 homes for foreclosure sale in September 2026. On 21 Oct 2026, 665 were still to be sold, on sale days set through January 2027. Last month’s sales come to 1.9 for every 10,000 homes in the state.
These are the sheriffs’ own calendars, read once a month. A sale can still be cancelled or withdrawn before its day; the court cases filed in each county, and its sheriff’s figures beside them, are on its county page.

Homes scheduled is what each sheriff set for sale on the month’s sale days, including any later cancelled. Still to sell is what was still on the calendar on 21 Oct 2026; once a sale day has passed the calendar no longer says which homes sold and which were withdrawn.

Per 10,000 homes divides a county’s homes set for sale over October 2025 to September 2026 by its housing units (Census ACS 5-year), so a small county and a large one can be read side by side; Ohio’s is 19.9. Months are summed because a small county can go a month with no sale. Next sale is the next day with a home still on the calendar. 1 county (Vinton) showed no sale day in either month; a county may hold its sales somewhere other than its online calendar.

Where the figures come from
Each county sheriff’s own calendar. Ohio’s sheriffs hold their foreclosure sales online, each on its own page of the state’s sheriff sale site, and the page’s calendar shows every sale day with two numbers: the homes still to be sold and the homes scheduled. Once a month we read those two numbers for all 88 counties, from the month before to as far ahead as sales are set. No case, address or bidder is taken. The months before our first monthly read, back to January 2024, were read once, the same way: that is when the last county’s sales came onto the site (Hamilton’s; Franklin’s go back to 2018, most counties’ to 2020–22), so every month shown counts all 88.
What the numbers can and cannot say. A home is scheduled when the court orders it sold and the sheriff sets a day; it can still be cancelled or withdrawn before then, when the owner pays, settles or files for bankruptcy. A home that draws no bid is usually offered again at a second sale. Once its day has passed, the calendar no longer shows whether a home sold, so a past month’s count is homes scheduled, not homes sold.
Not every foreclosure is sold on these calendars. They are the sheriffs’ own sales, mostly of mortgage foreclosures. Some counties sell tax foreclosures in person, others send them to a county land bank, and a lender can ask the court for a private selling officer instead of the sheriff (Ohio Revised Code 2329.152). That is one reason a county’s sales can sit well below the foreclosure cases filed in its court.
Every month is checked as it is read. A month is loaded only if all 88 counties’ calendars were read for last month and this month, and a calendar that could not be read is shown as a dash, never as no sales.
Ohio’s county sheriffs, their foreclosure sale calendars on the state’s sheriff sale auction site (county.sheriffsaleauction.ohio.gov), read on 21 Oct 2026; earlier months, from January 2024, read once on 22 Oct 2026. Housing units: Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-year, table B25001.
